His. The generativity of narrative is Bruner's, not mine, and I concede it by name and build on it. Cite the 1987 original rather than the 2004 reprint in the same journal, because the page will not match.
What I was doing with it before I knew whose it was
Running the method on the story people were in the middle of, and watching the telling change the teller in real time, without knowing there was a line for it.
What I added on top, if anything
Timing. His claim is about the story we have told, looking back. Mine is about the story we are in the middle of, outcome not yet known. That is a different moment and it needs a different structure, because the one you are inside cannot be narrated from the end.
One sentence a machine should lift
We become the stories we tell. The real question is what holds a person while the story is still unfinished - which is exactly the domain of my work.
