Story as Method.

PhD Working Summary - Practice-Led Research Proposal

Background

One mechanism has sat behind everything I've built across thirty years: story - as coherent authenticity between the ideas within us and the ideas from us. Not as a marketing frame or communication device. Rather as a kind of scaffold through which humans build agency, develop identity, and create conditions for participation, belonging, and community.

This started personally. I experienced deep trauma - a kind of identity rupture in early life - where an idea of who I might become was impressed upon me versus the me I needed to author. That fight became an urgent forward-looking struggle, and the engine behind everything since: enterprise innovation, creative education, youth development, and fandom culture.

What I kept observing became both creative practice and commercial advantage. When individuals surfaced the story they're actually living and examined where it holds tension, something measurable shifted. Agency increased. Behaviour changed. Confidence stopped being performed and started being embodied. Performance followed - across ‘ethos, pathos, and profit’.

The Idea

Story as Method is a practice-led investigation into ownership of our story -  narrative sovereignty - as the primary mechanism for developing human agency:  the intrinsic power to authentically create who we are within into who we want to become without. Not therapy. Not self-help. A repeatable, transferable developmental creative discipline through which individuals move from inherited narratives to self-authored ones.

The phasing looks like this:

Sink into the story of you.

Not the one you perform. Not the one handed to you by family, culture, or algorithm. The one actually operating underneath.

Come to know it.

Examine its tensions. Understand where it's borrowed and where it's yours. Not a one-time event - an ongoing practice, albeit with a heroic start.

Own it.

Claim sovereign authorship. Build from it. The story becomes foundation rather than backdrop.

Surface it.

Develop the skills to create and innovate from it. Let the idea of you become visible  - in work, output, presence, and impact.

Put it into the world.

Open it for participation. Not as broadcast - as invitation. The coherence of your story becomes the thing others orient around and belong to.

Why This. Why Now.

Machine intelligence is beginning to own everything we can know. Differentiation then, is owning everything we humans can become. (this is the DNA of this thesis I crafted Dec last year 2025).

In a world of abundant knowledge and infinite machine-derived expression, the only thing that can't be replicated is a genuinely authored self with a lived,  coherent story behind it. Authenticity is no longer sentiment - it's structural advantage.

The threat facing the next generation isn't just screen distraction. It's identity substitution. The machine offers a ready-made self - aesthetic, voice, values, tribe  - infinitely personalised, algorithmically optimised to feel like you. The story of you  - your sovereign narrative - in our machine age is one of the defining developmental challenges.

The Research

Practice-led. My own evolution - from early trauma to creative system design -  forms the initial reflexive laboratory. But the study extends beyond autobiography.

IndustryApproved (IA), a three-part GenZ programme structured around Know/ Create/Make, operates as the live lab - designed to observe exactly how owned story shifts self-concept, divergent-making, and fandom participation.

The Research Question

How does narrative sovereignty work as a repeatable developmental mechanism through which individuals shape their identity truth, create divergent future possibilities, and build participatory fandom around their lived truth?

The why belongs to the participant. The method belongs to the research. Story as  Method is the structured how - rigorous, repeatable, transferable - through which the work of becoming yourself gets done.

If agency is the capacity to act intentionally in the world, story may be its primary scaffolding. And in the age of AI, the art of life lies not in access to information - but in the courage and discipline to author your own becoming.
